Josh Beam's 30-Day Neck Training Experiment
Why I Took On This Challenge
As someone active in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, neck injuries are all too common—but neck training? Rarely discussed, let alone done. That’s why I committed to 30 days of focused neck training using Iron Neck.
I wanted to find out can you really build neck strength and size in just a month? Will it improve performance and injury resilience in Jiu-Jitsu? And is Iron Neck just another overhyped gimmick—or the real deal?
My Experience with the Iron Neck 3.0 Pro
From day one, the Iron Neck 3.0 Pro felt like a serious tool. The 360-degree resistance and smooth rotational capability made it easy to hit all angles without constantly resetting. I followed the Combat Sports Program from Iron Neck, which gave me a structured approach focused on isometric holds and dynamic resistance. The workouts were tougher than expected-but in a good way. I quickly felt the impact, especially during collar tie drills and postural training.
Trying Out the Alpha Plus Harness
The Alpha Plus Harness surprised me. It doesn’t offer the full rotation of the 3.0 Pro, and yeah, there's a bit more clipping and unclipping, but it's a legit training tool—especially for travel or quick workouts. I liked loading up weights and doing head lifts. It's lower-tech but still highly effective for linear strength training, and a solid budget option.
My neck actually grew - what the heck. I feel more mobile, stronger, and have less fear of injury.
What I Found After One Month
✅ My neck strength skyrocketed-my 5-rep resistance test became laughably easy.
✅ My neck plank time improved by 15 seconds.
✅ Perceived exertion and fear of injury dropped dramatically.
✅ My neck circumference increased (yes, it actually grew).
✅ I felt more confident in BJJ, especially in positions I used to avoid.
This challenge reminded me that consistent, progressive loading works-just like with any other muscle group. And I didn't need hours in the gym to make it happen.
